We are honoured to welcome Oscar and BAFTA nominated Costume Designer to discuss his career and talk about his experience on blockbusters such as ‘The French Lieutenant’s Woman’ or ‘The Pirates of Penzance’.

ACADEMY AWARD and OSCAR nominated Costume Designer Tom Rand was born in England although both his parents were Viennese. After Art School training and work in regional theatres he worked as an assistant designer at London’s ROYAL COURT THEATRE and THE NATIONAL THEATRE.   He then joined the BBC as a costume designer before working with leading directors of advertising commercials.

Tom’s first major feature film THE DUELLISTS Directed by RIDLEY SCOTT earned him his first BRITISH ACADEMY AWARD nomination for best costume design.   Other films include THE SHOOTING PARTY, PIRATES OF PENZANCE, ELENI, THE FRENCH LIEUTENANT’S WOMAN Directed by KAREL REISZ and starring MERYL STREEP for which he was nominated for an OSCAR and a second BRITISH ACADEMY AWARD, Franco Zeffirelli’s YOUNG TOSCANINI staring ELIZABETH TAYLOR, UN PONT ENTRE DEUX RIVES , directed by and starring GERARD DEPARDIEU, PRINCESS CARABOO, A BUSINESS AFFAIR, THE POWER OF ONE and THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO.

Tom has designed costumes extensively for British Theatre including HOLIDAY at London’s OLD VIC, three productions at the ROYAL EXCHANGE THEATRE in Manchester as well as many productions in Europe and America.

West End Productions include MEDEA, A BOSTON MARRIAGE, A LETTER OF RESIGNATION, THE BREADWINNER, WHAT THE BUTLER SAW, THE PHILADELPHIA STORY, THREE TALL WOMEN starring MAGGIE SMITH, and a total of 12 productions with HAROLD PINTER including 3 world premiers.

Tom”s film work was represented in the HOLLYWOOD COSTUME EXHIBITION at THE VICTORIA AND ALBERT MUSEUM in London before touring the world.

Most recently Tom designed the costumes for the opera ELEGY FOR YOUNG LOVERS at THE THEATER AN DER WIEN Vienna.
